LANVITO focuses on oilfield and specialty chemicals alongside automotive lubricants. Our gear oil manufacturing enquiries serve lubricant brands, importers, distributors and business buyers. Start with the intended automotive application, then define the viscosity, performance and packaging requirements.
| Specification dimension | What to identify | Procurement consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Manual transmission, transaxle, axle or differential | Record equipment requirements and operating conditions. |
| Viscosity grade | Required SAE grade | A viscosity label alone does not identify complete performance. |
| Formulation description | Mineral-based or synthetic gear oil positioning | Agree the formulation brief and market-specific label wording. |
| Performance requirements | Required service designation and equipment specification | Request evidence for the exact proposed grade. |

MANUAL TRANSMISSION APPLICATIONS
Manual Transmission Gear Oils
Discuss gear oils for your manual transmission product range. Specify the equipment requirements, including synchronizer and friction requirements where relevant.
Provide: Application, required specification and SAE grade.
Request: Product-specific TDS, proposed packaging and supporting performance information.
AXLE & DIFFERENTIAL APPLICATIONS
Axle & Differential Gear Oils
Discuss gear oils for automotive axles and differentials, including hypoid gear oil requirements. Identify the gear design, duty and required specification.
Provide: Axle requirements, operating conditions and SAE grade.
Request: Proposed grade details, technical documentation and supply format.
Need a Limited-Slip Differential Formulation?
Include the differential type and required friction characteristics in your enquiry. Availability and suitability must be reviewed for the proposed formulation; limited-slip compatibility is not assumed from a viscosity grade.
Understanding Gear Oil Viscosity Grades
Read the Grade
In a multigrade such as 75W-90, the W grade relates to low-temperature requirements and the second grade relates to high-temperature viscosity requirements.
Compare the Full Specification
SAE J306 classifies automotive driveline lubricants by rheological properties. The viscosity grade is not a complete performance or application rating.
Prepare an Application Brief
Confirm the required grade with the equipment specification and duty. A thicker or thinner oil is not automatically a better choice.
| Grade example | How to use it in a purchasing brief |
|---|---|
| SAE 75W-90 | State the intended application and performance requirements alongside the grade. |
| SAE 80W-90 | Do not assume interchangeability with 75W-90 from the shared high-temperature grade. |
| SAE 75W-140 | Confirm that the equipment calls for this viscosity and the proposed performance specification. |
| SAE 85W-140 | Include low-temperature requirements and operating conditions in the technical review. |
Mineral-Based or Synthetic Gear Oil?
Formulation descriptions do not replace application and performance requirements. For custom gear oil formulation, define the target specification, temperature conditions, product positioning and label wording as part of one manufacturing brief.
GL-4 and GL-5: What Buyers Should Check
| Topic | Buyer guidance |
|---|---|
| API GL-5 | Addresses demanding axle gear service, particularly hypoid gears. Check the exact application and product evidence. |
| API GL-4 terminology | API 1560, ninth edition, places GL-4 among designations not in current use, while recognizing its continued commercial description. Request supporting documentation. |
| Substitution | Do not treat GL-5 as a universal replacement for every GL-4 application. Follow equipment-specific lubricant requirements. |
| Limited-slip differentials | Additional friction requirements are normally defined by the axle manufacturer. Confirm these separately. |
For private label gear oil, review performance wording against documentation for the actual formulation before approving artwork. A contract manufacturing arrangement does not itself establish a vehicle manufacturer approval.
How to Read a Gear Oil Technical Data Sheet
Read the TDS for the exact proposed grade. Ask which values are typical and which form part of the agreed purchase specification.
| Data / document | What to check | Procurement implication |
|---|---|---|
| Kinematic viscosity at 40°C and 100°C | Values, units and test methods at the stated temperatures. | Useful for comparison, but not proof of complete performance. |
| Viscosity index | How viscosity changes with temperature. | Not an overall product quality score. |
| Low-temperature viscosity and pour point | Methods and measurement conditions. | Pour point alone does not establish low-temperature suitability. |
| Flash point | Method and reported value. | Not the maximum permissible equipment operating temperature. |
| Performance evidence | The formulation and application covered by each statement. | A generic product description is not grade-specific evidence. |
| TDS, SDS and batch documentation | Document version, product identity and agreed acceptance criteria. | Distinguish typical data, handling information and batch results. |
Discuss any additional requirements for corrosion protection, foaming, oxidation, seal compatibility or friction performance in the specification review. Request supporting information relevant to your application rather than assuming every property is demonstrated by a TDS.
Packaging concept; containers, labels and availability are confirmed for each project.

Gear Oil Manufacturing FAQs
Yes. Send the intended applications, technical specifications, destination market, packaging and quantities. The manufacturing and supply scope will be confirmed after review.
Use the grade required by the intended equipment and application. Examples such as 75W-90 and 80W-90 explain enquiry formats; actual availability and specifications require confirmation.
Do not assume interchangeability. Check the equipment specification and supporting evidence for the proposed product, including friction requirements where relevant.
No. Ask for suitability against the particular differential requirements. A viscosity grade alone does not establish limited-slip compatibility.
Do not assume interchangeability. Use the fluid specified for the particular transmission and application. This page focuses on automotive gear oil enquiries.
